What it can look like

Anxiety wears a lot of disguises

It is not always panic. Often it looks like being busy, being careful, or being the person who always plans for the worst.

Constant worry
Your mind jumps from one concern to the next, and the worry never quite finishes.
Panic attacks
A racing heart, tight chest, or sudden dread that seems to come from nowhere.
Overthinking
Replaying conversations, second-guessing decisions, and rehearsing what could go wrong.
Tension in your body
Tight shoulders, clenched jaw, stomach trouble, or headaches that are hard to explain.
Trouble sleeping
Lying awake with a busy mind, or waking early already on edge.
Avoiding and checking
Skipping things that make you nervous, or needing reassurance to feel okay.
How I treat anxiety

Relief now, and change that lasts

Anxiety is your brain’s alarm system doing its job too often and too loudly. The goal is not to never feel anxious. It is to turn the volume down so it stops running your life.

Skills you can use right away

We start with CBT: noticing the thoughts that crank up worry, testing them, and replacing them with something more accurate. We add breathing and grounding for the physical side, and small, planned steps toward the things you have been avoiding.

Getting to what drives it

Anxiety often has roots, such as a difficult experience or a long stretch of having to stay on guard. When it does, Accelerated Resolution Therapy can take the charge out of those memories, and Internal Family Systems helps you understand the worried or perfectionist part of you instead of fighting it.

Use your insurance

I accept the plans listed here for individual therapy. Send me your member ID and I will check your benefits before the first session, so you know your copay up front.

Coverage, copays, and deductibles depend on your specific plan, not just the company.
Not on the list? Self-pay is $150 per session, and I can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards work too.

Questions

Common questions

Do I need a diagnosis to start therapy for anxiety?

No. If anxiety is getting in the way of your sleep, work, relationships, or peace of mind, that is reason enough. If you use insurance, I will make a diagnosis as part of the first session, as required for billing.

How long does anxiety therapy take?

Many people notice a difference within the first several weeks as they start using new skills. Lasting change usually takes a few months, longer if the anxiety is tied to past experiences we need to work through.

Will I have to face my fears?

Gradually, and only at a pace you agree to. Avoidance keeps anxiety going, so we practice small, manageable steps. Nobody is going to throw you into the deep end.

Can therapy help without medication?

Yes. Therapy alone helps many people with anxiety. Others do best with both. If you take medication or want to explore it, I am happy to coordinate with your doctor.

Does insurance cover anxiety therapy?

In most cases, yes. I accept Aetna, Alliant, BCBS, Carelon, Cigna, Kaiser, and Providence, and I verify your benefits before the first session.

What if my anxiety comes from something that happened to me?

That is common. When anxiety is tied to specific experiences, we can use Accelerated Resolution Therapy to reduce the charge of those memories. You can read more on the trauma therapy page.

You do not have to white-knuckle it.

A free fifteen-minute call is a low-stakes first step. We will talk about what is going on and whether working together makes sense.
