What it can look like

Trauma rarely announces itself

You do not need a diagnosis, or a dramatic story, to benefit from trauma therapy. What matters is that something that ended is still affecting you now.

Reliving it
Images, sounds, or smells pull you back into the moment as if it were happening again.
Nightmares and poor sleep
Waking at the same hour, bad dreams, or lying awake because your body will not settle.
Always on guard
Scanning rooms, jumping at noises, never fully relaxing even when you are safe.
Avoiding reminders
Places, people, and conversations you steer around, and a world that slowly shrinks.
Numb or far away
Feeling flat, detached, or disconnected from people you care about.
Shame and self-blame
Believing it was your fault, or that something in you is broken.
How I treat trauma

Two ways in, and both count

Trauma is stored differently than ordinary memories. Understanding what happened is useful, but it often does not stop your body from reacting as if it is still happening. So I focus on the memory itself, at a pace that feels safe.

If you are ready to work on it directly

Accelerated Resolution Therapy is my primary approach. Using guided eye movements, we reprocess a memory so it loses its intensity. You keep the facts, but the flashback quality and physical reaction fade. EMDR is available if you prefer it.

If you need to feel steadier first

Internal Family Systems helps us get to know the parts of you that are doing their best to protect you, like the part that stays on alert or the part that goes numb. That work builds real safety and is healing on its own. Grounding and regulation skills help along the way.

Accelerated Resolution Therapy
Eye movements plus a guided image replacement step. Fast and private.
EMDR
The well-researched approach ART evolved from, if you prefer it.
Internal Family Systems
Parts work that builds safety from the inside, at your pace.
Grounding & regulation
Skills to steady your nervous system between sessions.

Not on the list? Self-pay is $150 per session, and I can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards work too.

Questions

Common questions

Do I have to talk about what happened?

No. ART and EMDR work with the images, feelings, and body sensations connected to a memory, not a detailed retelling. You decide how much you share.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what we are treating. A single distressing event often improves within a handful of ART sessions. Trauma from childhood or from many events usually takes longer, often a few months. I will give you a realistic estimate after our first session.

Does insurance cover trauma therapy?

In most cases, yes. I accept Aetna, Alliant, BCBS, Carelon, Cigna, Kaiser, and Providence, and I verify your benefits before we start so you know your cost.

What is the difference between ART and EMDR?

ART is an evolution of EMDR. Both use eye movements to help the brain reprocess a memory. ART adds a structured step where you replace distressing images with ones you choose, and it often works in fewer sessions. If you prefer EMDR, I offer that too.

What if I am not ready to face it?

That is common, and it is not a failure. Internal Family Systems lets us build safety and understanding with the parts of you that are protecting you. For many people that work is healing on its own, and it can also make direct processing possible later.

Does trauma therapy work over video?

Yes. Research shows telehealth trauma treatment works well, and many people find it easier to do hard work from home. For ART you will need a laptop or desktop and a private space.

You have carried this long enough.

The first call is free, takes fifteen minutes, and comes with no pressure. We will figure out together what the right starting point is.
